Vir (ital. Puntadura) is one of the 300 islands in the archipelago of Zadar and is situated in the northwestern part of Along the coasts of Vir you will find a plenty of sandy and pebble beaches with crystal clear sea, that make this island particularly suitable for family holidays. Another thing you can find here are isolated places that invites you to spend a day in your favourite bay. Almost 300 sunny days a year make Vir a charming holiday destination even beyond the main season. A constant, refreshing breeze tempers the midsummer temperatures and offers excellent conditions for sailing and surfing. The rocky coasts on the eastern part of the island, with its rich maritime flora and fauna, are an attractive diving area for lovers of deep sees. The touristic offer of Vir is exclusively private: family boarding-houses as well as private rooms, apartments or entire holiday houses. Vir is a quiet place, sans big hotel chains and mass tourism. Restaurants and cafés with shady terraces, konobe (dalmatian inns), a disco, as well as various shops, ambulance, pharmacy, post office, travel agency, green markets and a fish market complete the offer.
Zimitar was built in 1603. In the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century Lozice and Torovi followed. The castle Kaštelina, which is a ruin nowadays , was built in 1502 and served for protection against Uskoks and Turks. The isle is inhabited almost exclusively by Croats who came to the island in the 6th century. In 1570 Virani (the natives of Vir) began to emigrate to Istria and Vir was mentioned for the first time in the year 1069 in a donation document, known as „Mare nostrum dalmaticum“, of the Croatian king Petar Krešimir IV. Near the worth seeing Kaštelina you can find the bay of Šapavac, with its famous natural healing mud against rheumatic diseases. Apart from tourism the Virani are occupied with seafaring, fishing, agriculture and livestock farming.
